How to mount/wire an RFID reader
PURPOSE
Describe the procedure to mount and wire a New or Replacement RFID Reader on a Kiosk. Also know as the Applied Wireless ID (AWID) MPR-2010BR.
PROCESS
Hardware Mount Guidelines
- Verify that the RFID reader is mounted,
- From the Kiosk in the lane, launch the AWID test software on the desktop.
- The RFID Reader is now ready for use.
How to Wire the RFID Reader (Micrologic Pegasus and Mister Kiosk)

- Locate the 12V terminal block in the kiosk.
- In the Mister Kiosks, it is in the upper part.
- In the Pegasus Kiosks, it is in the bottom left (blue and yellow).
- In XPT 1.0 use the wall adaptor power supply of the RFID reader
- Connect the power wires to the terminal block.
- Wire Black to the Positive.
- Wire Red to the Negative.
- Crimp the Cat5e cable to the T568B pin assignments.
- Connect the crimped cable to the DB9 Female to RJ45 adapter.
- Connect the adaptor to the appropriate COM Port on the computer in the kiosk.
- For Mister and XPT Kiosks, it is COM1.
- For Pegasus Kiosks, it is COM4.
- At the RFID Reader, crimp the Cat5e cable and attach it to the DB9(male) to RJ45 adaptor.
- Connect the adaptor to the RFID Reader’s serial port.
- Modify the power supply cable that came with the RFID Reader.
- The goal is to keep the barrel connector.
- Cut the cable at least 4” away from the barrel connector.
-
NOTE: One of the two wires has a dashed line.
- Connect the power cable to the power supply cable.
- Black to Black.
- Red to Dashed Black.
- Connect the power cable that has been modified to the barrel connection of the RFID Reader.
Install with Combo Serial/Power Cable (DRB Cable)
- Disassemble Components at the RFID Enclosure
- Open the RFID Reader Enclosure.
- Remove the serial connection from the Circuit Board.
- Disconnect the Cable Wires from the Circuit Board.
- Take apart the DB9 connector from the RFID Cable to expose the wires.
-
NOTE: The Circuit Board and DB9 connectors will not be used and can be discarded.

- Modify Pin Out From Cable to Reader
- PIN 2: Orange to Orange.
- PIN 3: Blue (Cable) to Purple (RFID).
- PIN 5: Green (Cable) to Blue (RFID).
- Power: Black to Black, Red to Red.

- Prepare the Cable at the Kiosk
- Cut the DRB Power Supply cord near the switching adaptor.
- Expose the wires (white and shielded).

- Connect the Power Supply Adaptor
- Connect the Power Supply Adaptor to the Serial Cable that plugs into the Kiosk.

- Connect Voltage at Kiosk
- Splice the DRB Power Supply Line, expose the 2 wires.
- Blue is 12v DC Positive, Yellow is 12v DC Negative.
- Connect the White Cable to the Blue Power Block.
- Connect the Shielded Cable to the Yellow Power Block.

Retrofitting an RFID Reader with No DB9 Connection or old DRB Serial Cable
- Run a Power Cable and a Cat5e cable from the kiosk to the RFID Reader.
- The power cables need to be no thinner than 22-gauge.
- Be open to using up to 16-gauge wires.
-
NOTE: It is optional, and discouraged, if you recycle the barrel jack, what matters is divorcing the data and power lines.
- On the computer end, use the normal black DB9 Male adapter with a normal ethernet cable crimp.
-
NOTE: the build your own DB9 adaptors have a different pinout than what tunnel controllers use and are not compatible with the RFID readers.
- Use this pinout for the build your own Female DB9 Adaptor.
-
- Connect the Power Wires:
- Red to Red
- Black to Black
- Strip the twisted pairs in the ethernet line on the RFID Reader end.
- Ensure there is plenty of copper exposed for high quality connections.
